December 2011 — "Located on trendy White Ave, this place had a really old time look and feel from the bowling decor, cafe style booth and stool seating and even the Louisianan Mardi-Gras and voodoo traditional decorations. In the background you could listen to your favorite blues hits, or select some on the jukebox. The food was very authentic Cajun and Creole cuisine. I got the jambalaya and it was very tasty and plentiful. Together with their complimentary biscuits and jalapeno jelly, the meal was very delicious. I definitely want to go back when in town again. "Who Would Have Thought..."

February 2011 — "Who would have thought Edmonton would be the place I'd end up trying my first catfish po'boy? That's indeed what happened not too long ago. Some friends of mine brought me to Da-De-O, and I'm glad they did! The restaurant is located on Whyte Ave. and is fashioned to appear like every long and narrow diner you've ever been in. The big difference of course, is that instead of your standard open-faced sandwich, or corned beef on rye, the menu features items such as a jambalaya, corn bread and the above mentioned catfish. It's hard to gauge whether or not my po'boy was good or not, simply because I hadn't had one before. I will say that it was quite tasty, but paled in comparison to my two side items: the hand made sweet potato fries and a slab of fresh corn bread. If I could do it all over again, i would have passed on the catfish and doubled up on the fries and corn bread. Both were that good! The service here was okay, nothing all that special. If there is one thing you might want to avoid, it's their microbrew beer that is infused with chili peppers."

"I Could Eat Here Every Day!"

May 2010 — "Ever since I came to Edmonton, everyone I know has been telling me about the best Louisiana-style restaurant in Western Canada, called Da-De-O, on the city’s iconic Whyte Avenue. So many of my friends raved about it that my husband and I finally decided to try it out for our anniversary, and our expectations were definitely high. That is why I was a bit surprised to find that we completely missed finding the restaurant on our first try while driving along Whyte. On the second attempt, we found it, but from the outside, it is certainly small for such a popular restaurant, and you can definitely miss it if you are not looking carefully. We had made reservations the weekend before, which was good considering that although there were several seats available when arrived, a lineup began to form soon after. I was again surprised as we walked to our seats at how narrow this restaurant was, and again surprised at the 1950s-style diner atmosphere, complete with black and white tile floors, jukeboxes at the booths, and a long counter to sit at if you are unlucky enough not to get a booth. The booths seat two or four people, and the staff wears what they want to wear, but it all works very well. And that is before we tasted the food! I was continually surprised during my meal, and this continued when I saw the menu. I knew the food and selection would be great, but I was not expecting the low prices. There were great appetizer options, such as crab cakes, fritters, gumbo, nachos, wings and 4 kinds of oysters, all inexpensive (under $12), and all Louisiana-style cuisine. For main courses, there were several kinds of jambalaya, catfish, poorboys, ribs, blackened prawns and scallops, salads and much more, and again, all extremely inexpensive. We ordered Hurricanes, a rum-filled New Orleans drink, and tried to decide what to order. Our server was efficient, high-energy and friendly, and clearly, the staff are happy at their jobs, not just in the way they deal with customers, but they all help each other and cover all the tables as well, something I love to see. We finally decided on oyster shooters for appetizers, and I had a combo of jambalaya and blackened shrimp and scallops, and my husband had St. Louis ribs. In no time we had our food. The oyster shooters were great-they were made with vodka and herbs, and they were delicious. Our main courses were so impressive, not just in the huge portions, but in the quality of the food. My husband’s ribs literally fell off the bone and were not just flavoured with barbeque sauce dumped on top; instead, the flavour permeated the meat all the way through. My combo plate was wonderful-I was worried that the blackened shrimp and scallops would be overdone, but they were perfectly cooked and sweet. My jambalaya was spicy and satisfying. Between bites, we raved to each other and promised to return often. For dessert, we had a New Orleans dessert called Banana Foster, which was prepared at our table by our waiter. Let’s just say that is was the sweetest dessert we’d ever tried, full of melted butter, brown sugar, brandy and fried bananas-it was divine! I highly recommend Da-De-O to anyone who loves delicious, well-priced food and excellent service. I cannot wait for my next visit! "

November 2007 — "Great little spot for lunch or dinner. Always busy, great decor, great service. The food is fantastic. Best sweet potato fries I've ever had. The po-boys are very good as well. I've never been disappointed with this restaurant. And the locally brewed Alley Kat Pepper Beer is unique to this restaurant and goes so well with the cajun food. I love this little spot on Whyte Ave, and will continue to eat here often."

"Hipster diner serves good food"

June 2007 — "I stopped at Da-De-O for supper with a friend when I was in town to catch some bands recently, and wondered why I’d avoided eating there for so many years. Da-De-O has been a haven for a variety of hipsters and college students, with its retro décor and location on Whyte Ave, for as long as it’s been open. Frankly, it’s always one of those places I avoided, because places like this usually charge too much for small portions of sub standard food, but stay open because they remain a place to be seen at. I had Da-De-O pegged all wrong. Billed as a New Orleans style diner and bar, Da-De-O serves their take on Cajun and Creole food in the setting of a 50’s diner. We arrived early, to beat the crowd, and only found ourselves waiting 5 minutes for a table. We ordered a couple beers to start and chatted while we looked over our menus. I ended up ordering the special, Seafood Jambalaya ($15), while my friends ordered the Southern Fried Chicken ($15). The food was on the table in short order, and I was blown away by the size of the portions. My Jambalaya had tons of shrimp, mussels, scallops, crawfish and clams, mixed with veggies and rice, and came in a big bowl. It was hot and delicious and more than enough to feed my healthy appetite. My friend’s order of chicken was huge. He got half a chicken, fried, with a large serving of sweet potato fries on the side. He had enough left for a snack after the show that evening. I left Da-De-O with a smile on my face and a full stomach. The food and service were good, and besides being a little on the pretentious side, I enjoyed my surroundings while I ate. Good value for your money and a good place to people watch while you wait for your food. They’ve also opened a second location in Vancouver, so if you’re looking for a place to eat there, or in Edmonton, check out Da-De-O. Da-De-O 10548A 82 Ave "
