April 2012 — "After a long day at work, we decided to go out to eat. Our original destination was Chianti's at Willow Park, but it was extraordinarily busy so we ended up going to the Willow Park Broken Plate. I felt a bit under-dressed, as we had planned for a casual dinner out, but the server's didn't seem to mind. It was fairly busy for a Tuesday night and we got a nice table for two by the window. Our server was very friendly and took our drink order right away. We decided to order spanakopita to start and then I asked the server's opinion between Lamb Chop and the Rack of Lamb. He said the Rack of Lamb was definitely the better bet. I think it cost $35, but I didn't care about price that night, I wanted quality. Our spanakopita was amazing. You get two with the appetizer and it was so fresh and delicious. The rack of lamb was served with veggies and lemon dill potatoes. It was so good! The whole evening was outstanding and I will definitely go back to this restaurant. Excellent service was also a great bonus. I had never been to this location, just the Kensington one, but the Willow Park location was far superior."

"Disappointing"

January 2011 — "Well, I was disappointed with this experience. I'll start with the good things - our server was friendly, the ambience was pleasant with murals on the walls with a greek feeling to the colours and painting...the restrooms were very clean, and the music was not too loud. Other than being sometimes shocked by smashing plates or whooshing fire and loud shouts of "OPA!" the ambience was fun. However, my food was soooo disappointing! I chose to have a mediterranean salad; I just had one a few weeks ago in the tiny town of Athabasca and was very pleased with the quantity, presentation and taste and was craving another one. Well, it just didn't compare. The salad was incredibly small; it just wasn't big enough for a meal, and the lettuce was kind of soggy because it was swimming in the dressing...there was a nice big piece of feta cheese on the top - definitely a bonus. Our server, although friendly, seemed to be in a bit of a hurry to have us leave so the experience (other than the company!) was less than satisfying. "

"Great Set Menu"

December 2010 — "Food is always fantastic at the Broken Plate. Our experience was no different when we went for dinner on New Year’s Eve. With several locations throughout Calgary we like the one in Kensington best. The tables, both high and low, are well spaced. For New Year’s Eve, they had a special set menu. We ate squash soup, lamb, and baklava. The soup was absolutely delicious. It was sweet, severed at just the right temperature, and the most memorable part of the dinner. The lamb was tender and absolutely succulent. The baklava was also good but not as notable as the other courses. But unlike other restaurants, the desserts definitely seem fresh and homemade. The three course meal cost each person $50, quite a good deal considering the event and the quality of the food. Most entrees on their regular menu cost between $20 and $30 before tax. They also hold special ‘plate breaking’ every Friday and Saturday. Any of the Broken Plates are worth a visit for their great Greek food."

July 2010 — "On a Friday night during Stampede, we decided to head to Kensington to have dinner. I didn't want to join the pub, party atmosphere, so when we walked by the Broken Plate I thought it was a good alternative. We were greeted quickly at the door and even though we didn't have a reservation, we were seated at a two-person table right away. The only downfall of this place is that the music was REALLY loud, but at least it was Greek-style music. At times, we could hardly hear each other. It must have been because of the Stampede. The service was really good, he was very efficient. To start we had the bruschetta and it was delicious. You got 4 pieces of baguette covered with feta, tomatoes etc and garnished with reduced balsamic vinegar. It was really good! I ordered the lamb chop that came with potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Very, very good as well. The lamb was perfectly cooked. I was impressed with the quality of my food and will likely be back!"

"OPA!"

May 2010 — "Greek food is definitely a meal I enjoy, but finding a good place is always a bit of a challenge. The place that I have gone and revisited over the years is Broken Plate. I'm sure a lot of diner should say that it is overrated and expensive, but I think it does have a pretty consistent level of quality. The best dish is undoubtedly their appetizer - the calamari with taziki sauce. Yum. So good that the calamari melts in your mouth, with the perfect amount of crunch and crispiness. I always think of lamb when we are out for Greek food. I ordered the braised leg, which was braised. I regretted it, but only because I continuously order dishes with the right protein, but mixed with the wrong method of cooking for my palate. So, next time, I'll do something else, but it's still a good dish. If you haven't tried already, you should give it a go! You even get to break stuff after your meal. OPA! "

"Fun, Friendly, and Filling"

January 2010 — "Upon recommendation, took the wife out for dinner last Saturday (the 27th), to the Broken Plate across from Crowfoot (Ranchlands I think?) and was pleasantly surprised! We just moved from Renfrew to Arbour Lake, and found that there are very little options for a good place to eat. Anyways, this plate was great! The place was BUSY! Didn't have a reservation, there was a line-up, but somehow the manager squeezed us in, in about 10 min. Our server was super friendly! She recommended the saganakki (flaming cheese) and calamari... great choices. I had the Rack o Lamb, and the wife had the Halibut, both excellent. Later the waiters and manager did some dancing while plates were being broken and shouts of Opa echoed the room. It was a good time, definitely will be back again! My only suggestion is to maybe make a reservation, outside of that... top shelf!"

"Authentic Greek Crusin"
Image

Save Review

December 2009 — "This year for my wife and I's x-mas dinner we decided to go to Broken Plate. The crowfoot location isn't as nice as the Kensington location here in Calgary. The prices are about the same as Moxies or Montanas. But the food was a lot better. We starting of with the flaming cheese that anyone that goes should try. They bring out a piece of cheese in the shape and size of a slide of pizza on a grilling pan then light it on fire before putting in down on your table. I'd say at least half the people in the restaurant had this starter dish. I always get my steak rare. But it's hard to find a restaurant that does a good job to my liking. Broken plates definitely got it right. Same with the rack of lamb my wife had. Both was more pricey than the other menu selections, but definitely worth the price."

"Great Place for Greek!"
Image

Save Review

October 2009 — "Although I've never tried true authentic Greek food, I have to say the food still tastes great. I dropped by one night, feeling slight hungry and ordered a few appetizers. When I stepped in, the atmosphere was so lively and people in the corner were having fun breaking their plates. The restaurant was dim, full of friends, families and couples laughing by the candlelight. Since I wasn't very hungry, I ordered the Saganaki - which I joyously watched the waiter flame up the slice of cheese (don't order if you don't like goat cheese taste), the hummus, dolmades and ended off with a baklava cake for dessert. The food was great, although I would prefer the dolmandes without the thick sweet sauce. Overall, the waiters were friendly and this is the place you want to go if you just want to relax and enjoy. "Not my First Choice"
Image

Save Review

September 2009 — "I was curious to try the Broken Plate in Willow Park, after I heard rumours that after you finish your meal you get to break your plate. This was something I needed to see. The restaurant is spacious but warm and has a modern Greek feel. My guests and I were seated in a comfortable booth, with a very attentive waiter who described the specials in great detail, and was very helpful when asked for a recommendation. I myself however, didn't take his advice and ordered the bruchetta to start, which was very good though a bit oily, and the lobster ravioli. I found the ravioli quite bland and was unable to identify any actual lobster in my meal. While I wasn't overly impressed with my meal, my fellow diner's were quite satisfied with theirs. I was quite happy with the free glass of wine we were offered with our meal although I'm not sure if that is an everyday occurrence or if they were merely asking us to sample a new brand. As for the plate breaking, their was some going on, but I didn't get to break my own, and was told by the waiter that it is only for birthdays and anniversaries. All in all, I think the Broken Plate wasn't a bad choice for Greek Cuisine but it wouldn't be my first choice. "

"Tasty Greek Food in NW Calgary"
Image

Save Review

August 2009 — "The Broken Plate is a nice Greek Restaurant located in the NW (across from Crowfoot Crossing). The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated and offers a comfortable place to dine. The outdoor patio isn't very nice. It is small and you feel like you are sitting in the parking lot beside parked cars. I recommend sitting indoors. My mother and I both ordered the Moussaka for $18 each. It came with a small portion of Greek Salad. The Moussaka was delicious! As with all Greek portions it was quite large. I would have been very happy with half the amount of food. To drink I had green tea. The tea tasted a bit off. It had a coffee flavor to it. I think the water must have come out of an urn that had previously been used for coffee. My mom's tea tasted the same. This restaurant was a bit pricey but the food was great. Perhaps splitting a main meal and an appetizer would be a good alternative when dining here. The drinks were also a bit pricey. The service was quick and the servers were friendly and accommodating. "Great experience"

December 2008 — "We made reservations for a group at the Kensington location during the holidays when usually there is a set menu. We were allowed to order off the regular menu as well. It was my first time there and I found it a bit noisy but it was the holidays. The decor was modern with several immense vases and touches of blue to remind us it was Greek. And of course the traditonal dancing and breaking of plates. The service was slow to start but improved during the evening. The food was excellent. The menu has traditional elements but with modern touches. The Calamari Salad was awesome and could be a meal in itself. Prices are a little high but well worth it."

October 2008 — "I liked the atmosphere at the Broken Plate, but I found the food average and pricey. I ordered two appetizers (dolmades and hummus) as a meal and thought they were okay. The dolmades were kind of bland and the pita bread that came with the hummus tasted like the stuff we buy from the grocery store. The Broken Plate gets top marks for decor and atmosphere, but needs to work on its food."

"Very Ordinary Food at Fine Food Prices"
Image

Save Review

August 2008 — "At $180 for dinner for three, I expect something more than tavern or diner fare, but that's pretty much what you get at the Broken Plate. For the most part, the food is not bad (though some of it is), but it is very ordinary. Greek salads were fresh but made with poor quality vegetables (e.g., hard, woody tomatoes) and cheap, mushy cheese. Seafood souvlaki was unsubstantial, slightly overcooked, too salty and accompanied mostly by starch (rice, potatoes and undercooked carrots). Desserts were very bad: rice pudding was cold, hard, congealed and tasteless; baklava was dry, hard and slightly burnt. Coffee was undrinkable--tasted like instant. Service was polite but uneven, attentive at times, slow at others, particularly between courses. One server could not answer simple questions about the menu or the house wine and had trouble uncorking a bottle of wine (had to go for a second bottle after breaking the first cork). Three different servers served us over the course of the meal. The environment is also more like that of a tavern than a dining room. The much too loud disco-like music forces everyone to shout. Tables are close together. Definitely not a restaurant to choose if romance, business or even conversation is part of your dinner plan but probably good for office parties and the like."

"Greek never tasted so good!"

February 2008 — "Not your ordinary blue and white greek restaurant.......finally! :) I went on a weeknight after work one day, and really liked it. So I booked for the next weekend because the waiter said there was dancing and plate smashing. When we got there, the room was packed. The servers were dancing and had everyone clapping. The place felt completely different than a weeknight. Tons of fun! Definately a place to take your celebrations. So far, the food has been outstanding...best lamb chops I've ever had! The menu is mostly greek, mediterranean. There are lot of other things that aren't traditional but just as delicious and creative like spinach and feta risotto. All-in-all the amazing food, really attentive service, and fun atmosphere will keep me coming back. (more than likely on my b-day, so I can smash a plate, OPA!) "

"Okay, but not very Greek!"

January 2008 — "This place was a huge disappointment for me -- I was really in the mood for Greek cuisine, but the fare only vaguely resembled any kind of Greek food! The menu had many pasta and meat dishes that you could find at any other boring restaurant. We waited forever for our food, and once it was put in front of us we immediately thought "what IS this??" It wasn't terrible food, but it was definitely the worst "Greek" food I've ever had. Way too Americanized! If you're looking for an authentic Greek culinary experience, do not go to Broken Plate. On the upside, the ambience was nice and the host very friendly. It was the menu that was most disappointing! Not worth the money. Still looking for good Greek food in the city :("

October 2007 — "We went to the Kensington location for a birthday celebration. The evening started out great with loads of fun, great drink and ok meal. At the end of the evening we paid our bill in cash with a tip and proceeded to visit with another table for about 10 minutes before leaving the restaurant. While on the street waiting for a cab our waiter came out and pulled us aside from the other crowd standing there and told us there seemed to be a problem with the bill. He accused us of shorting it $20. We knew we had more than enough to pay the bill along with a tip because it was all double checked. He had plenty of time to point the so called error out to us while in the restaurant. We felt he took advantage of 4 women from out of town who he thought had had one to many sangria. We gave him the extra $20 against our better judgement but with cab waiting and crowd around us it seemed the right thing to do. We will definitely not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Unfortunate that one bad waiter can ruin it for everything."

September 2007 — "We have been to the Ranchlands location and loved the appetizers so we went to the Kensington location for my birthday. We had the flaming cheese again and it is just to die for! The calamari is very tasty, and we had the feast for two which was super. I would say that after the appetizers that the feast for two could have served four as we took most of it home. The only bummer was the table. We were six people so they seated us at the only big table which is at the front door (rainy night, cold wind) and next to the window. Makes for a not so comfy dinner!"

We started with the calamari and the mussels-awesome! broken plates calamari has always been the best in Calgary. The main meals however were not as great. my husband had the Lamb Shank which tasted as though they boiled it to death; no taste- and the "sauce" on top of it was terrible. His side of spinach rissoto was like glue- very bad. I'm hoping they just had a off night- but i don't think we will be returning. "
