April 2009 — "I wish I had a time machine, as I would surely use it to warn myself from eating here. A group of co-workers and I popped in for what we thought would be a quick meal as they advertised a lunch buffet. We walked in around 12:30 and was happy to discover that there was no wait for a table. As it turns out this would be the only highlight of our visit. We quickly went to the buffet table and found there was virtually no food left, and what was there, was definitely not fresh. That’s odd, middle of lunch hour and there is no food at this “lunch buffet” ?? We were assured the food would arrive promptly so we ate what was there (maybe a few pieces of sushi)….30 minutes later there was still no sign of the food being refilled and the rest of the restaurant was getting visibly annoyed. Once we hit the 45 min mark and there was no food in sight, we decided to leave. (I cant believe we waited as long as we did) Us downtown workers only have so much time for lunch and we can’t afford to sit waiting around indefinitely. After we told the waitress we were extremely unhappy and wanted to leave, she brought us the bill for the full price. This did not sit well with us as we did not think we should pay full price for 5 sushi pieces between 4 of us. Some one from the kitchen came out and offered a 50% discount. We were so angry with the service we just wanted to pay and leave. Most expensive 5 pieces of sushi I have ever eaten….I wish I had a time machine."

September 2008 — "I went to Sobaten for lunch today and it was a very pleasant experience. I ordered soba noodles and they were fresh and flavourful. I also had some sushi which was tasty! Very reasonably priced! Service was pleasant and efficient!"

June 2007 — "I just texted my friends who decided the food might be worth the wait, the food still isn't ready. It's been 35 minutes.
Soba is advertising its new lunch buffet. Great idea, considering one of the reasons I don't usually go for Japanese for lunch is because of the time it can take to get your order. Unfortunately, Soba has decided to take this route with its buffet. When my friends and I got there at 12:15, there was very little food left but we were assured that they do infact refill the buffet and that fresh food would be brought out shortly. at 12:40 I had had enough waiting and left the restaurant. The waitress was hesitant to take my $15 dollars off of the bill. Ridiculous.
I just got another text. The chef just brought out a plate of salmon sushi. The people there are rationing it. He says it looks like everyone got one or two pieces.
It's now 1pm, my friends have had enough of the waiting and left. Management wants them to both pay the full $15 dollars for the 2 pieces of Salmon sushi they 'generously' received in 45 minutes.
So if you wanna live the life of an impoverished family in 1860 Kyoto and don't mind paying $15 dollars for the experience, by all means visit Sobaten and their lunch buffet."

"Really gone downhill"T
May 2007 — "This used to be a very good soba/udon restaurant but it's gone way downhill in very short while. Both the soba and udon bowls came barely lukewarm when it should be piping hot and they've started to cut (yes, cut in half!) their tempura to make it look like more. Be prepared to wait for at least 45 minutes for your food, even if you're the only one in the restaurant. The worst part is that the servers have gone from quiet to loudly offensive.
I've gone to Sobaten and taken my family there for almost 3 years but I wouldn't go there anymore. It's too bad because they used to be very good and now I can get better food and service from an Edo Japan in the food court."

August 2006 — "I ate at Sobaten today and it was just okay. In fact, with all the different places you can eat in Calgary, I would say go somewhere else. I got the Combo A with Beef Noodle Soup with Soba noodles and California rolls. The rolls were okay, but I did not like the noodles.... at all!!! The service was very quiet, you couldn't hear what they were saying. "
