April 2012 — "I have a good friend who finds choosing a place to eat extremely frustrating as someone who is intolerant to gluten. Her go-to spot for a pub on the weekends is usually Craft due to their vast selection of gluten free items however waiting in a 20 minute line up and having to search for somewhere to stand, let alone sit, was discouraging this particular day. We did a quick google search from within the abyss at Craft and discovered Classic Jacks had a bunch of gluten free options. The best/worst part about this is that Classic Jacks is right by where I live, and where we started our journey which made walking all the way to Craft a waste of time. Once we got to Classic Jacks it was busy, but the wait was minimal. The staff were very friendly and chatted with us while we waited. Our server was a doll, always kept our waters and drinks topped up, and overall provided a very quick but quality service. I enjoyed that Liefmans was on special, it somehow tastes more delicious that way. Their menu options were great, a lot of yummy sounding items to choose from. Once our food arrive we were quick pleased, the salads were great, extremely fresh tasting produce, and the chicken sandwich I ordered was perfect. My friend even enjoyed her gluten free bun with her Fat Elvis burger. Portions were plentiful and I can't wait to go back! "

October 2011 — "We have been to Classic Jack's a handful of times. It's not only a great pub atmosphere on 17th ave, but also a great restaurant with great daily specials and even better prices to meet any sort of budget! I especially enjoy their steak sandwich with either wedge fries or a side salad for 7.95 every Thursday night. The steak is a very lean, nice cut. Thick, delicious and always done just the way your order it. Last time we went, I ordered the all you can eat mini burgers. They just keep bringing them til you tell them to stop. Not a bad deal, and pretty good little burgers. The service I have always received has really been top notch. The servers, very friendly, enthusiastic and quick to help out with anything. One time my wife did send back her fish and chips as it was over done, and they took care of it with no problems asked. Even gave a couple extra pieces of fish. Great upbeat place, on weekends and even on weekdays. "

"A Good Deal"

July 2011 — "Classic Jacks is located on 17th Avenue SW. We sat along the north wall where you can open the windows and it almost feels like you are on the patio. The place was hopping with several groups of men sitting together and several groups of women doing the same thing. Seemed like a place to chat with friends. They had a great special that evening- any of their gourmet hamburgers with one side for $8! I chose the Jalapeno burger. It came with lettuce, tomato, and of course jalapenos. It tasted really good! As a side, I ordered a bowl of jalopeno chicken chowder soup. It had celery and corn as well as chicken and jalopenos. Again, it was very enjoyable. Another awesome thing about Wednesdays at Jacks is that they offer all glasses of wine on their menu for half price! That works out to about $4 a glass. A good deal for Calgary for sure. The patio looked like a great place for beers in the late afternoon as it seemed it would get the late afternoon sun. Our server did a good job of looking after us and I plan to return to Jacks another time for sure. "

July 2011 — "I am impressed. Classic Jack's has a comfortable and open feeling, and is nice and bright considering it is very much a bar. We sat next to the windows which completely open for warm days so we could people watch and enjoy a bit of sunshine. The music was a bit loud but it is, after all, a bar. Each day there is a featured special - today was Vin Burger Wednesday - with all gourmet burgers for $8 (includes 1 side) and almost all vino on for 1/2 price (either glass or bottle). as well, later in the evening live and local music is featured. I chose the Louisiana Cajun with organic and free range chicken instead of beef - the burger is normally $14!! Whoa. So the special is a good deal. This one had white jalapeno jack cheddar, guacamole, jalapenos, cajun spice, lettuce, tomato, onions, and chipotle aioli - it was incredibly tasty - I chose a ceasar salad as my side and it was filled with garlic (which I like). The wine I chose was normally $8.50 so I got a reasonable deal with a $4.25 glass...overall it was a terrific experience and the service was fantastic."

"A favorite on 17th Ave"

May 2011 — "Classics Jacks Restaurant and Bar is one of my favorite bars on Calgary's popular 17th Ave. It seems that each bar located on the Red Mile has its distinct vibe and caters to a certain crowd. Classic Jacks strikes a nice balance between an upscale experience and a laidback atmosphere. There are specials every night of the week (wings night is on Thursdays) and the menu is more varied with lots of unique selections. The service is always fast and friendly and this place can be quite crowded on the weekends when there is usually a live DJ or band around 9pm. Be prepared to bring ID because they're very strict about checking everyone at the door. One of my favorites on their menu is the crab dip which is different than anything else I have tried and served with a fresh hot plate of pita. Highly recommended for its great service, atmosphere, and food!"

"Great Patio"

July 2010 — "This is a great standard place to relax and have a drink on the patio. It is located on 17th Street which makes for good people watching if you are there in the summer months when the patio is open. Inside, there isn't a ton of space but they have some really comfortable booths. The wait staff were all very friendly and attentive, even when it got a bit busy. The menu has a fair amount of options on it, with a lot of great appetizers as well. I had no problems getting my order modified to come with a few healthier options. The food was surprisingly good for the expectations I had for a pub. The only real downfall with this place is the lack of parking, but that is no different than any place near 17th Street. I would recommend this restaurant and pub and certainly will be going back! "

August 2009 — "I actually eat at this restaurant at a regular basis. They have recently renovated the interior adding modern stonework to the walls and have new granite table tops throughout. The service has always been extremely friendly with the waitress' introducing themselves by name. The menu is excellent with a wide variety of foods to satisfy every appetite. You given the options of choosing 2 sides with your meals and the servings are very generous. The food has always been consistent and the kitchen is always willing to modify the orders if you have a specific request. I recommend the Turkey Club Sandwich changed to a wrap. The cranberry mayo is what makes this combo complete. The spinach salad is also very tasty and it has always been made with fresh ingredients. Another favorite of mine is the Beef Dip, I recommend having this with added mushrooms... goes good with fries! If you are out with friends they have a good drink menu with a wide variety of cocktails and also a nice beer selection with hard to find Import beers. Honey Dew I discovered this summer is an Organic beer from the UK that really tastes like honey! (Plus with none or the heavy preservatives- this beer makes for decreased hangover the next day) "

"Most delicious chicken rap EVER!"

June 2009 — "Came here for some patio time with some friends! I had the California sandwich but I asked for it on a wrap and it was soooo great! Lots of flavors that was not too filling. It was a really great value too! I had it with the yam fries and they were awesome too, I was so full from the sandwhich that I almost couldn't eat them all. Also the yam fry is so much better for you than regular fries. They also have cheap wings on most week nights. And they are not the dinky, pitteley wings that you normally get when it is cheap wing night at other places. They also have buckets of beer deals all the time which for 17th ave. My friends got the fat Elvis burger and and the BBQ chicken burger and they said that they were great. Service was fairly quick but she was a little snooty. But really who isn't snooty on 17th ave?"

"NOT IMPRESSED With My Last Experience Here"
Image

Save Review

January 2007 — "Classic Jack's isn't a spot where I normally hang-out but I do come with friends once in a while for a quick pint before going elsewhere or to watch a game. It isn't my favourite place in Calgary but I certainly don't mind it and usually have a good time when I do go there. They've got a pretty impressive pub food menu and everything I've ordered there has tasted really good. The ambiance is pretty plain but it's fine for a sports bar. And they usually have a pretty good drink special going on throughout the night. I was pretty unimpressed with a recent experience there though. I went with a group of 7 or 8 friends, mostly girls, to watch a football playoff game on a Saturday. Since there was a Flames game on that night we called ahead to ask if there would be a TV or two playing the football playoff game. We were assured that there would be, but still when we got there we made of point of saying that we were there to watch football so could we please sit by a TV showing a game? I believe it was one of the managers that seated us and he said it would be no problem to sit by a TV showing football. Halfway through the football when the Flames game started, each of the numerous TVs (there must be at least 20) in the bar switched over to hockey. No problem, we thought... we'd just ask to have the one TV that we were sitting by switched back over to the end of the football game. We asked one of the servers if it would be possible to finish watching the playoff game and she was very polite and said she'd look into it. The same person who sat us at our table came over and switched the channel back, but not without making a big production out of it and looking extremely put out at having to do so. We thought it was a bit silly, as we had made it clear to this same person earlier that we were at the pub to watch football, but we did appreciate him turning the channel back for us. Immediately after changing the channel though a single customer (one person in the entire bar, which was pretty full) began complaining that the one TV we were watching was not playing the hockey game. The guy made a huge production about it, giving us dirty looks and complaining to the staff member who changed the channel back for us. Every other TV in the bar was still playing the hockey game but this guy just had to watch the one TV we had been watching for over an hour. Luckily the staff member did leave our TV on football to be fair. We thought it was a bit ridiculous that there should be such a fuss over a single TV, especially after confirming twice that we'd be able to watch football, but still appreciated that this staff member had stuck up for us, so we made a point of personally thanking him for allowing us to continue to watch the game. His only response was to let us know that we should be happy because "It nearly caused a riot". Seriously? A single customer complains that one TV out of 20 isn't showing the hockey game and that is considered "a riot". We were really unimpressed by his reaction to our having gone out of the way to thank him. We didn't feel that we were asking for anything out of the ordinary, especially since we were a polite table of 8 or 9 customers vs. a single person who didn't want to have to choose any of the other TVs in the bar to watch the hockey game. Once the football game was over (only a few minutes into the second period of the Flames game... so the guy was 'inconvenienced' for slightly more than 30 minutes) we immediately changed the channel back so this other customer could watch the game on every single TV, if he so wished. Nonetheless, when we left we still heard him mumbling something about being glad that the table of (word that rhymes with witches) was leaving so he could watch the game. Nice. Most guys I know would think it was pretty cool that a table full of women wanted to sit in a pub and watch some football, but not this guy! We weren't surprised that he and his buddy were on their own. I will say that other than that bad experience, the rest of the night was fine. Our server was obviously over-worked but she was still great. Usually very prompt and got all the orders right. The food we ordered tasted good as did the drinks. And that once customer was definitely not representative of the bar's other patrons, who all seemed nice enough. A few even came over to stand by our TV and finish watching the football game as well. We were just disappointed at the one staff member's (who we're pretty sure was a manager) reaction to our trying to thank him and to having to put up with being verbally abused by a single, miserable and unhappy patron when we were a large table happy to pay and tip our waitress well. I definitely know my group of friends and I will be spending our money at a different establishment on Superbowl Sunday. If anyone wants to respond with a recommendation for a good place for a nice group of women to watch some football, feel free to let us know! "
