June 2011 — " The sushi here is amazing. They don’t have a huge selection but the sushi that they do have is really good. This place is pretty small and I consider it a small gem that not too many people know about. Whenever I go, I rarely have to wait for a long time. The restaurant is small but usually full. Last time that we went, we ended up sitting in the area near the kitchen so we did not have a table but instead little bar stools. I didn’t mind this as the restaurant looks very clean and cozy. We sat in the corner and ordered a few kinds of sushi. We had some with mango and another with avocado. The sushi was fresh and looks very delicately made. It tastes great and isn’t too expensive. I think that you pay for the quality of your sushi so it ended up being about $55 for the two of us which I thought was reasonable. The service was good. I also saw that the noodle bowls they had were very big so next time I will be returning to try one of those appetizing bowls! "

"Favourite Japanese Cuisine in Town"

March 2011 — "Shikiji is a small Japanese restaurant serving sushi, noodles, and other specialty dishes located around the corner of 16th Ave NW and Centre Street. What sets it apart from other Japanese places around town is the great tasting sushi and dishes not commonly found on other menus. A quick look at the menu shows their unique blend of western cuisine into their sushi rolls. There are lots of different ingredients included in the sushi not found in other places. There are new and different special items on the menu each week which gives you a reason to keep coming back. Their noodle and ramen bowls is also well worth a try. Unlike most Japanese ramen bowls these noodles are made in the kitchen from scratch and has a unique taste. The quantity of the bowls is also plentiful which became obvious when I tried but couldn't finish my gigantic portion. "

"Incredible!"

May 2010 — "My friends decided to try something new and had heard good things about this sushi place so we decided to give it a try. They don't take reservations and it was a Friday night so we were a bit worried we wouldn't find a place to sit, but they found a spot at the sushi bar for us immediately. Compared to some sushi places, their menu isn't totally mind-boggling but it has everything you would want from a Japanese restaurant -- appetizers, noodles, soups, rolls, sashimi, etc. We each ordered a sashimi plate and then a bunch of rolls to share, as well as some gyoza. The food came pretty fast and we were really impressed -- their presentation is amazing. They use little decorative touches like rose petals and make a really artistic looking dish. The food was just as tasty as it looked -- everything was amazing. The gyoza was especially great -- it was unlike any dumplings I've had, delicious. Surprisingly, the price wasn't outrageous -- it was average for a sushi place. I will definitely go back. "

May 2010 — "I visited Shikiji on center for dinner by recommendation for sushi and am pleased with the experience. Entering the restaurant, it was cozy and small and we were approached with warm welcomes from the staff. We were seated immediately and after taking a look at the menu, I decided on the Katsu Don Curry and my date had settled on the tempura Udon and together we ordered some piece sushi, ocean mango and shake. Our food came in a timely manner. First and foremost, I noticed that the curry had large chunks of beef in it. It was extremely flavorful and maybe even addictive, when poured over the pork cutlets and rice together, it was just simply amazing. The tempura udon was generous with the variety and amount of tempura and my date quite enjoyed his dish as well. The shake was portioned relatively small although was quite fresh and the ocean mango was very delicious and definitely worth coming back for. The bill came to a total of $45 for us both which is quite affordable. I will be making a return trip to try the other sushi varieties but all in all shikiji placed in my top 5 sushi restaurants to frequent."

"Excellent lunch choice!"

January 2010 — "After a couple bad experiences eating at Shikiji, I haven't been back in the longest time until recently. I decided to give Shikiji another try for lunch and boy am I glad I did. Shikiji has updated their lunch menu since I've been there and they now have an extensive lunch menu with lots of options to choose from. The service was outstanding from the moment I walked in. We were seated immediately and got our drinks and orders in really quickly. For food, I ordered a combo with sushi, sashimi, teriyaki chicken, rice and miso soup. The portions were generous and filling. I was amazed by the food quality. The fish seemed very fresh and the chicken was tasty. The miso soup was piping hot. I don't think I can find one negative thing to say about this experience. It was outstanding and I highly recommend you give Shikiji a try for lunch."

"Unspectacular but Tasty"

July 2009 — "That pretty much sums up my last visit to Shikiji. I ordered the Curry Katsu Don. As usual the meal was served on a tray and looked very...ordinary. The curry was obviously just beef simmered in Glico curry cubes, but was nonetheless just what I needed on a rainy night. In other words, I had ordered Japanese comfort food. The portion given with the order was quite ample. On top of my bed of rice were three fair sized pieces of battered pork fillets, and the curry came in a moderately sized bowl. It would have been nice to have a bit more rice with the meal, especially considering how much curry I had leftover. The service was prompt and pleasant. Kudos for allowing my group to move from the counter to a table when one opened up. In the end, while I should have probably ordered the soba or the ramen, I can't say I won't come back here when I'm craving curry and am too lazy to make it myself."

"Great Ramen..!"

January 2008 — "There are few 'good' sushi places in Calgary... In my opinion, Shikiji is the one of the best place. Price is little bit high, but reasonable for that taste. Interior is good, not too big, and not too small. Food is not too salty, not too spicy. They have lunch combo and good ramen collection (also Sanuki Udon). Their Catsu Curry Don is the best cuttlet curry meal in the Calgary. Have no wonder why you have to wait if you don't have reseveration. Good to treat your friends, but do not bring too many people. "Far The Best Sushi in Calgary"

December 2007 — "This restaurant is so much better than others, because it offers not only taste, but beautiful arty presentation as well. Every order is designed differently, sushi is fresh and very flavourfull, yet the pricing is normal. Environment is beautiful, cozy, unlike ordinary Japanesse restaurants. It is far from where I live, but my we all go there whenever we have a chance. It is far the best restaurant in Calgary for sure. "

"Yum!"

January 2007 — "I return to this restaurant at least once a month because, although it is rather out of the way for me, it is the best sushi Calgary has to offer! It is far tastier (and cheaper!) than the overhyped sushi restaurants downtown and in Mission. There are many choices of sushi offered with lots of different new choices. They always bring a sample of a new appetizer at the beginning of the meal. It is generally something I wouldn't think of ordering, but end up getting it because it's so tasty! Their tuna sashimi is the best in town - crisp and cold and melt-in-your mouth. Really high quality stuff. The service is great, too! And best of all, the value for what you get is exceptional. Try it!!"

"Best Noodles"

October 2006 — "I've had sushi hear a few times and it has always been fresh and the pieces of fish generous. I had heard for a couple of years though about how awesome their soup is and finally tried it this weekend. I've had udon at various places around the city and in my opinion, this place offers the best. You can get udon or ramen or soba. I had udon. There were only about four choices of udon, and it cost around $12, which is a bit steep for soup, but was definately worth it. I had tempura soup. The stock was very flavourful, and smelled wonderful. My friend had the Shikiji soup. The presentation was beautiful and included a quail egg on the side to add! This is authentic Japanese soup. The atmosphere here is modern Japanese. They were playing cool chilled out beats too. Service was friendly and efficient. "

"Fantastic sushi!"

August 2006 — "I realize that it is a big claim, but I would have to say that Shikiji has the absolute best sushi in Calgary. I must not be the only one who thinks this, because it was packed when I went on Friday. The sushi is so fresh it just melts in your mouth. They have all of the usuall nigiri and rolls, plus some really unique sushi too. I loved the "Ocean Mango sushi" - shrimp and crab in tangy mayo with mango on top of fried bean curd. I can't wait to go back again, and next time I plan on trying one of their giant bowls of udon or soba noodles. Most tables had at least one bowl of noodles, so I'm sure they must be great too."
