March 2011 — "I have never been to Vern's during the day for any reason, but I have been to countless music shows on weekends since moving to Calgary. Vern's is one of the greatest supporters for live music in Calgary and you can find pretty much EVERY type of music there, depending on the day. The beer is always cold, drinks are under $6, and the nachos are especially good. They are great to order up and share with all your friends and come with all the toppings and cheese you could want! The bar tender is the staple at Vern's and a huge part of the success without a doubt. He remembers everyone is keeps control of the place while showing everyone a great time. Vern's isn't exactly known for its cleanliness, and the bathrooms are definitely pretty bad. But the place has a very friendly, welcoming atmosphere and the crowd is always a lot fun. "

September 2010 — "Verns is a great little place that supports live music in Calgary. It doesn't have the best reputation as far as atmosphere or cleanliness goes, but if those things aren't that important to you, then it's a great venue! I went on a Saturday to check out a friend's band. I was greeted immediately by the bartender, who was extremely friendly and accommodating all night. The beer I had was fresh and cold, and was below your average price for a pint in Calgary. Verns is in the basement so it is quite dark and dingy. The eclectic music the venue supports makes for some pretty interesting customers, but everyone was quite friendly. We ordered an order of nachos, which Verns is supposed to be famous for. They were definitely amazing! They were HUGE and the toppings and cheese were very generous. The only thing I have to report badly on is the condition of the washrooms. They were pretty much repulsive. However, the great food and drink, good music, good crowd and extremely good staff will see me back again! "

"It Really Is A Basement"

June 2008 — "Vern's is located in a basement and I really felt like I was in someones basement rather than a pub/bar with live bands playing. That's not necessarily a bad thing but it was something different for me. The decor is pretty much non-existent except for the stage area that had drum cymbals plastered all over the back wall. Small, dark and dingy is what best describes Vern's but once again that is not a bad thing if that's what you're into. "

This live music venue, previously known as The Barfly, hosts local and out-of-town live entertainment each day of the week. Vern's also offers a full menu, pool tables, darts and video games. Music genres include folk/roots, metal, rock, rockabilly, comedy, alt-country, ska and alternative. Happy hour is from 4pm-7pm and hours of operation are 11am-2am. An online schedule of band is updated each week.
