May 2012 — "Tubby Dog is a must-visit for those in Calgary. If you're a local and you've never been, shame on you! It's a fantastic experience, and that's something I never thought I'd say about a hot dog joint. Tubby Dog is a retro diner-style hangout that's open during the day, though I'm guessing most of its clientele have never been inside as they've only frequented the pick-up window that's open until all hours of the morning. It's well worth a visit during the day too -- the atmosphere is very hip and dynamic with good music playing and sometimes even a band. As for food, I've never left disappointed -- or hungry. Their hot dogs are expensive but they're gigantic and a full of flavour so they're worth it. The A-bomb is favourite among first-timers and at the risk of sounding lame, I thinks it's my favourite of the many I've tried. But honestly, they're all good. "

"One of a kind Hot Dogs! "

November 2011 — "Tubby Dog is a very original, creative one of a kind Restaurant on !7th ave SW in Calgary! Inside, decorated as on old 1960's arcade. With actual working pin ball machines, and other games like Pacman. Unique menu items with laugh out loud names such as The Thriller. They serve up Hotdogs and Hamburgers with outrageous toppings and condiments such as peanut butter and jelly with captain crunch cereal! One of my favorite items on the menu is their oversized onion rings. Very crispy and very delicious. They also have great fries, shakes and fruit smoothies. Its more of a fast food environment, but also with an old diner feel. Casual experience with laid back, friendly staff. They usually have the projection screen set up on the back wall and show older movies, and cartoons. Its a fun little place with alot of spunk, the food is fun, and its a great place to go with friends, or a date! They do serve up alcoholic beverages, but it is family friendly too. Try it out today! You'll keep going back for more! "

"Entertainment book coupon not honoured"
Image

Save Review

May 2011 — "I was very upset to find out that they would not honour the enterainment book coupon. It was my main reason going (it as buy one get one free menu item) since I have found this place to be overpriced. Their excuse was that they were asked if they wanted to continue with the same coupon as last year and that entertainment just put it in anyways. My thoughts on this are they should still honour the coupon and sort out with Entertainment some form of compensation for not asking without the customers being impacted. The service was quite slow but the hot dog and fries were quite good. I don't think I would go back though as I really wasn't impressed with the coupon refusal and the slow service."

"Unique Hot Dogs"

April 2011 — "Tubby Dog is a retro themed restaurant and/or fast food hang out depending on your definition. Located on the heart of 17th Ave it is a popular place among the many twenty somethings that live in and around this neighborhood. Having a reputation for some of the oddest combinations of hot dogs I was intrigued enough to give it a try on a late Saturday evening. The restaurant is often occupied by bar hoppers on late weekend evenings looking to grab a greasy bite to eat to help cure the next morning's hangover. Their menu offers a wide selection of hot dogs and other grease treats with an unique assortment of toppings. The classic Tubby Dog is the most popular and features a huge spoonful of chili poured over your dripping hot dog. Better grab more than one napkin if you plan on eating here. There's also a project in the dining area showing retro movies which adds to the atmosphere."

"Retro! Fun! "

November 2010 — "Tubby dog is such a funny little place. Oozing with originality, I really don't think there is any other place like it on earth. What a fun spot. I love it because each time I go I have an entirely different experience. Whether it be the food, or noticing something new, playing pinball, or watching a retro cartoon or black n white film on their TV projector on the wall! They are known for their astounding and mindblowing hotdogs. 10 different kinds that will make you laugh or possibly cry. The one that stands out always for me as the most intense and shocking is the Captain crunch dog. A basic foot long, with Captain crunch cereal, Peanut butter, and Grape Jelly! I have had it on a number of occasions, and each time its different but amazing! You need to check this place out if you A: like hotdogs and B: Have a sense of adventure with food. All of the dogs sound strange, a crime against nature; but they are all soo good in their own way. I would also recommend the onion rings. They are by far the best onion rings I have had anywhere in my entire life. And Secondly they are probably the biggest! The staff are always fun, friendly, the place is filled with different nic nacs and lil treasures you could spend hrs looking at all of it. And of course don't forget the retro pinball machines and other old arcade games! Its alot of fun. Great date-night idea. One of my favorite places to go. Full bar-- and family friendly as well. "

"Great Late-Night Snack"
Image

Save Review

October 2010 — "I wandered into Tubby Dog with a group of friends this Halloween after a few hours at a party nearby. The place was hopping; full of late night revelers looking for some good eats before heading home. There were only a couple of tables available and they hadn't been cleared of garbage from the previous guests. However, that can be forgiven as it was so busy. The queue to order seemed to go on forever but we didn't have to wait long to be served and it only took a few minutes to get our dogs. They've got a huge range of toppings choices and I found it tough to decide. I ended up getting the Cheetah which includes sauerkraut, cheese, mustard and relish. It was good but I found the combo of kraut and mustard to be a bit too sour for my liking. All of the burgers looked delicious though and I'd love to go back and try another. I was especially impressed that they carry veggie dogs so there are plenty of choices for those who don't eat meat. Tubby Dog was a great place to get a tasty, quick bite to eat. "

"Have your doctor on speed dial!"

July 2009 — "Ever wonder what peanut butter, jam and captain crunch on a hot dog will taste like? Well you don’t have to wonder anymore. Tubby Dog has your answer. They serve exactly this hot dog and more. I would recommend this be a regular visit, but would probably not be so good for your heart. I mean, eating a hot dog wrapped in bacon and topped with a fried egg can not be good for you! But this is what I ordered on my last visit and it was pretty good. If your still not satisfied, then order the onion rings, which are extremely greasy and larger than my head. Hot dogs range in price from $2 to over $10. Nonetheless, a great place to visit. The service is good and your food always arrives quickly. They also sell Tshirts so you can prove to your family and friends that such a wonderful place does indeed exist. The menu is like what a child would come up with if you gave them complete control of their meals!"

"Spoken word and encased meat? It works"
Image

Save Review

April 2009 — "Tubby Dog is one of those joints that draws an eclectic mix of folks throughout the day and night, creating a dynamic and lively atmosphere. I popped into this 17th Ave hot spot with some friends to check out a spoken word gathering that occurs the first Tuesday of each month and was impressed on all levels. The smell of grilled meats set my mouth to watering as we queued up to order and the young gent behind the counter was friendly and efficient, getting our drinks right away (they even serve Pabst Blue Ribbon). The menu is comical, with such favorites as the Gripper (an artery-blocking blend of encased meats, cheese, bacon, and egg) and the A-Line with peanut butter, jam, and Captain Crunch cereal. Odd combos, to be sure. But these bizarre mixtures of flavors somehow works, even if the calorie count is probably off the charts. We also ordered up a side of onion rings that turned out to be bigger than my hand, with crispy batter and not too much salt. Very tasty and filling. My only minor beef was the volume of the stereo, it made it difficult to hear each other talk in the beginning. But once the speakers were turned down to gear up for the spoken word event, I could relax and enjoy the funky vibe. Tubby Dog is an unusual culinary and sensory experience, one I would heartily recommend to anyone with a robust appetite and open mind. "

"I love this place"

October 2008 — "There is so much about this place that I love. Tubby Dog puts Calgary on the map and is a must see/eat for all visitors and locals. I take all my friends and family here, it's a great place to meet and hang out. I am the only one in my group that doesn't eat the meat hot dogs(even though their reviews are stellar) but I am in bliss with the veggie dog and all of my usual trimmings. The staff is always amazing."

"These dogs will send you to heaven"

July 2007 — "These dogs will send you to heaven one way or another. This place is as much an experience in the ultra cool urban culture of Calgary as it is a taste experience in how far can you go with a hot-dog. I love Tubby dog, but I have to limit my consumption or I will be looking for a cardiologist. From the most basic hot dog to the insane , bacon wrapped, deep fried, chili, onion, relish, cheese, ketchup, with a fried egg on top dog. This place has it all. The onion rings are another experience, they are gigantic, more like onion donuts! Great prices, aways friendly service and a great since of humor. I love Tubby Dog! "

"Heart-attack On A Bun the Best 'Dog Ever"

May 2007 — "Tubby Dog is an amazing 17th Ave joint, with specialty hot dogs and beer. With loaded toppings that require you to use utensils, it makes you feel less guilty for indulging in a favorite child's food. Despite being an unhealthy choice, the temporary satisfaction is worth the hours spent at the gym. Whether its a simple post-shopping treat, or an after-bar trek, Tubby Dog has become one of my favorite places in Calgary. Even if its just for a beer, the staff are always friendly, and the variety of music and films playing is great. An original Tubby Dog, with chili, cheese, onions and potato chips sprinkled on top is the way to go, although the unusual Cap'n Crunch hot dog is worth tasting. Yam fries are also a great side, although one hot dog is more than enough."

"Fantastic fries"

April 2007 — "Ok I know, I know Tubby dog is about the hot dogs but seriously the fries are amazing here. Instead of traditional wedges or thin fries, Tubby serves their fries as slices. Some sort of delicious combination of seasonings and salt spice up these 'taters and make them hard to resist! The dogs are good but the fries are the best."
