January 2011 — "I met some friends here for dinner on the recommendation of a chef friend and I wasn't disappointed. The food was amazing and the service was (mostly) top notch. One thing that surprised me was that it wasn't busier, but we went on a night when there wasn't a show at the Grand so that might be why. I had the fish of a the day, which was an arctic char with orzo and vegetables. The fish was great -- my only complaint would be that the orzo and veggies were lacking in flavour, but they were still quite good. My friends both had seared scallops with mushroom risotto -- I tried some and it was amazing. I would highly recommend it. I had the creme brulee trio for dessert and it was very good. The service started off very well (which, considering it wasn't busy is not surprising.) Our waiter was prompt, helpful and very friendly. However, at the end of the night, when we were waiting for our bill, we were ignored for at least a half an hour (at this point we were the only people in the restaurant.) Eventually, we had to walk up to te bar to ask for service, which I think is quite ridiculous in a high scale restaurant. But all in all, it was a good experience and I would definitely go back. "

"Memorable Christmas Party"

December 2010 — "My company had our Christmas party at Velvet this year. It's a beautiful little restaurant located in the Grand Theatre downtown. I had never been, but would love to go and try their menu after experiencing such great food and service at the party. They served some lamb chops that were the best I have ever had, and I'm generally not really a fan of lamb. They also had little bison sliders, bruschetta, rare roast beef with caramelized onions on baguette, and puff pastries with asparagus and cheese. All of the food was delicious. The servers were very friendly and professional and did a great job of orchestrating the food and drink service all night without really being overly obvious. The atmosphere was festive and funky, and I am sure there is a great vibe when they are serving the public. The washroom was very clean, and the venue and service resulted in our Christmas party being a huge success. I recommend Velvet if you are needing a place to host an event, and I'm sure they are great for a smaller dining experience as well. I know I'm planning to find out soon! "

"They treated us like royalty"

October 2010 — "On October 1st 2010, my Husband and I urgently trying to find a nice place to eat for our anniversary decided to go to Velvet at the Grande. We had never been before but had always wanted to! My husband made the reservation and told the Host it was our anniversary. Upon Arrival, we were seated in our own special area, as if they had been waiting for us the whole time. Our host even pulled the chair out for me! We were then brought complimentary glasses of champagne. And not the cheap stuff! It seemed they were glad to see us, like we were old friends! The Menu was extremely reasonably priced, for the atmosphere and it seemed under-priced for where we were. But we were not complaining! We ordered The Bruschetta sampler ($12) which was 3 medium sized baguettes with 3 different kinds of Bruschetta, Mushroom, Tomato, and Red pepper, each unique in their own way. Next we shared the Squid, which I left alone as it was a lil too squidy for me with no batter to conceal the icky parts. For my main course I chose the fish of the day which was lovely fresh BC salmon. I can honestly say it was the best Salmon I have ever had, served with asparagus and wild rice. Delicious! And Reasonable $30! We had a wonderful time, together, and would definitely go back. I think I would call it a hidden Gem for sure! They also serve their ice water with Cucumbers which I thought was a very nice touch to the end of our meal! "
