"Great Steak and ribs!"

February 2012 — "Saltlik in Calgary is an awesome place to find a great steak in a fine dining atmosphere. My wife was impressed with the wine list, and the extensive menu. Its a great place to go for date night or a special occasion. All steak entrees are cooked to perfection. They have some awesome chefs in the kitchen working hard and serving up some deliciousness. Our server was happy to help us but not too pushy and I liked that alot. We took our time with the menu ordering starters, and eating slowly. For my entree I enjoyed the NewYork Sirloin strip with ermite Bluecheese butter dipping sauce. It was astounding really. Served with garlic mashed potaoes and pecan honey snow peas and side ceasar. The ribs are also amazing, I have ordered them in the past and have always been quite pleased with them. Saltlik is a classic favorite that never changes. We will keep doing back for the great food and service we always receive. "

January 2012 — "I would say go to Saltlik if you have never been before. It is a superb dining experience for any occasion. Great drinks, appetizers, and menu selection. A friend recommend we try their ribs and my husband will always jump on a place thats known for their rib racks. So we went out on a date night this past month. Its a great atmosphere, a class above your average steak house. Beautiful wine selection and extensive drink menu. We were not dissapointed. We were seated right away, as we did make a reservation for this Friday night. It was quite busy and might be hard to get a table without one. I really liked the candlelit tables, and romatic feel. Beautifully lit throughout. We had calamari as a started and were impressed with the portion sizing. My husband had the beef ribs, that came stacked and were quite meaty. Served with his choice of two sides. I myself enjoyed the pan seared lois lake salmon. Simply amazing. Served with a tomato and caper chutney it was salmon served with flavors I have never tasted before. Great place to book a funtion, or party. We will sure be returning to try some more of their amazing dishes. Original, unique flavors for the adventurous eater."

"Beautiful steak, beautiful service"

October 2010 — "My boss took me to lunch at the Saltlik. Neither of us had been there but it was suggested to us by a colleague. The place was beautiful! Everything was perfectly presented. The decor is stunning. The servers were very well put together and we were given the greatest service from the moment we arrived. We were seated right away and the specials were discussed in a quick but very knowledgeable fashion. We started with some fresh oysters, which I could have sworn were caught an hour ago! They were that good. For my main, I had the cab sirloin, and I added a skewer of prawns. Every bite was perfection. My steak was cooked exactly how I like it. My boss had the pulled pork sandwich, which looked amazing. We pretty much ate every bite. We were much too full for dessert, which was too bad because the dessert menu looked very tempting. I would love to come here sometime for a date in the evening. I'm sure dinner is just as beautiful. The menu is a bit pricey but the quality of the food and service is undeniable. Great restaurant. "not what it used to be"

June 2010 — "Saltlik last week to treat my wife, been a few times both here and in Banff. Had nice experiences previously. Expectations were just too high. The service was not what I would expect from a $30-$40 plate restaurant. We sat unattended for 20 minutes - server finally came and apologized for mix up, no worries mistakes happen. But the meal was doomed from there really. Lots of errors, no utensils,no water offerred, and my wife's steak was like leather, with a steak knife we could hardly cut it. I might have liked to have ordered a refill on our drinks but the waitress wasn't around to ask it of her. When she came to retrieve our plates, she did ask abot the meal, but when we expressed some disappointment her reply was - "that's unfortunate" and walked off. I have come to expect poor service in Calgary but it is getting to be too much. Next time we'll just go somewhere and get a hamburger or to a real Steakhouse and pay a little more. "

May 2010 — "We went to the Saltlik the other night to celebrate a good friend of our chemo finale. We were booked into the private room downstairs. I’m not sure if this is just reserved for private parties or its just another part of the restaurant? But it was nice! We had a tone of appetizers which were all delicious! My wife and I didn’t feel like drinking so we both ordered a diet coke. With out asking our drinks were both refilled as soon as they were both put on the table! It was really nice because the room was hopping! My only complaint is they make you give a credit card to start a tab. We expressed to the waitress that we wanted to pay by debit and she said “no problem, you can just take the tab up stairs and pay up there when you are finished”….however, when we were finished they handed us the bill that had already been processed on my card. This erked me – but I did not make a complaint at the time. In the grand scheme of things – we were there to kiss chemo goodbye not argue with the waitress….but I did think it was kind of rude!"

"Disappointed."

April 2010 — "I first visited Saltlik a year ago for an anniversary and loved everything about this place. I had amazing service, steak and experience. However upon returning visits, the bar I set for Saltlik dropped more and more and this month I was really disappointed. My first visit this month was a one on one dinner with a close friend. I received ok service which was surprising compared to my previous experiences. There was some delay between our appetizer and entrees but in good company, I was able to forgive this. I left satisfied. Last week however I attended a birthday with a set meal. The set meal started with "soup followed by salad" and we had a debate with the waitress who insisted it was one or the other not both options. She left to check with the kitchen and came back to confirm we were right. My "steak and potato soup" had one small chunk of steak piece which was unlucky as other people around the table got two pieces. Salad was average as any other caesar salad would be. I chose the 10oz striplion/scalloped potatoes for entree. Steak came cooked well but the potatoes were mashed and not scalloped. Confused I mentioned that my plate was cold in which the waitress nodded but chose not address this and walked off. Eager to get dessert as we were in a tight schedule, the cheesecake did not disappoint, I'm not a fan of cheesecake but I've always polished off Saltlik's cheesecake. All in all, it wasn't horrible but I was thoroughly disappointed and most likely will not be returning."

"Saltlik Steakhouse"

Save Review

December 2009 — "a recent business lunch took me to Saltlik Steakhouse located on Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary. The décor in the Saltlik is very warm and cozy and has a beautiful chandelier of what looks to be hand-blown glass towards the back of the restaurant. It is quite impressive, especially if you are seated at the large round table right underneath it. We were seated near a fireplace and although it looked beautiful I think it would be hot for the person sitting closest to it. We shared an order of calamari which was nicely spiced and lightly crusted. For my main meal I ordered the Mushroom Gruyere burger served with French Fries. It came dressed with a mayonnaise-type sauce, a slice of tomato, red onion and pickle served with a large portion of skinny fries. My burger was well-cooked and the fries were addictive. The bathrooms are located downstairs along with a billiard-type room that looks especially nice for hosting private parties."

"Decent Steak"

July 2009 — "This is a decent steak house located right on Stephen Ave Mall. The location requires a bit of a walk if you decide to drive down here. Otherwise, it is a perfect walking destination if your looking for a nice stroll. We found ourselves here for dinner on a Saturday evening and had no trouble getting a table. The mood of the restaurant is what you would expect from any other steak house, although it was a tiny bit on the dark side in terms of lighting. Service was decent and our food arrived within a reasonable time and our drinks were filled often. I ordered the New York Peppercorn Striploin and it arrived medium rare as I had ordered it. However, I found the steak to be a bit dry and was not as juicy as I normally expect from this steak. Prices were reasonable also with most steaks costing in the mid $25-30 range. It was a decent experience, though not sure if it left me with enough desire to go back for round 2."

"You Won't go Hungry Here"

May 2009 — "A higher end place to have lunch on Steven Avenue, the Saltlik is definitely worth every penny. The decor is modern and lavish but still comfortable. The service was friendly but not overbearing, and the food was fast and fresh. I had the Mushroom & Gruyere burger, and at $15 dollars I found this to be a reasonable price. Served appropriately with a large steak knife, the burger was huge and barely fit in my mouth despite my muddled attempts to cut it in half. While it may have been a little messy, and not necessarily something I would recommend for a first date, the burger was juicy and delicious. The plate was piled high with skinny fries, and despite best efforts, struggled to finish them all. While the Saltlik is not the kind of place you would frequent on a daily basis, it is a nice treat for lunch and I look forward to trying it out for dinner. "

"Fantastic!"

January 2009 — "Recently I decided to return to the Saltlik - I had a wonderful dinner there with my husband and thought I'd try again with a friend from out of town. It was bitter cold outside so we needed a pick-me-up. Wow. It is really a great place. I love the decor - very calm and contemporary, and a great place to people watch if you can sit next to the window. We started with the Almond Crusted Cheese Pate for $10 and it was divine...no other word...smooth, rich, creamy...just delightful and enough for two people. I followed with the Wild Salmon Fillet combined with a horseradish aioli and sweet pea risotto ($27)...mmmm...horseradish is such a clever combination with Salmon - something I never would have dreamt of. The risotto was tasty but a bit heavy for me - nonetheless, I ate it all! The server was very pleasant and attentive. The only real criticism I have is the washrooms are in the basement - not very accessible, unless perhaps there is another entrance I'm unaware of? I hope so as it is a restaurant that should be available to everyone. "

January 2008 — "Great atmosphere, great food, very accommodating to indecisive, picky types like me. My husband and I are pretty particular and we were quite happy here. We will certainly return in the future. Atmosphere lends itself to dressy casual, but you can push it more or less in either direction. Food wise: I wasn't in the mood for steak, so I made a meal out of the crab and grilled asparagus. I had champagne with my appetizer (flatbread with some sort of curried spread) and meal. Then came some port with a chocolate molten ganache dessert. The dessert was just rich enough without being overwhelming and was nicely balanced by lush berries and cream. Hubby had traditional steak and potatoes type meal. Steak was lovely, not overcooked, and 'like butter'. Everything came to $114."

"Great atmosphere and food"

August 2007 — "We kicked off a friend's stagette party here last week and it was a ideal place to begin a fun-filled night. We looked a bit silly - with bride-to-be wearing a playboy bunny outfit and the rest of us wearing rabbit ears out of solidarity - but no one commented on our strange outfits. In fact, the manager came over to welcome us and thank us for choosing the restaurant to start the night. There was a great selection of wine, martinis and drinks. There was a wide selection of food as well. I chose the crab & shrimp cakes and even though they were an appetizer, they were big enough to serve as a meal. They were also the best crab cakes I have eaten anywhere! So tasty, with giant chunks of seafood in them, on a spicy mayo sauce and a generous side of fruit salsa. About half of the group ordered steaks with a baked potato and said they were also great. I found the prices to be reasonable - about the same or less than a comparable restaurant like the Keg. However, I would go here over the Keg any day, as the atmosphere is so much classier and less rushed."

May 2006 — "This was my first time dining at the Saltlik on 8th Avenue and it was great. To start off with we had a mixture of marinated olives and their Almost Famous Dry Ribs which are coated in this amazing tamarind honey glaze. I had a rib-eye steak topped with citrus/rosemary butter and it was very moist, tender and flavourful. It's how a steak should be. The service was excellent, very prompt, good suggestions and friendly conversation. Check out this steak house, I will again. "
