"Too loud for my liking"

December 2011 — "It was very busy on the evening we visited the District. We only came here to check it out because we had a voucher from one of those deal of the day websites. We ordered one appetizer and two entrees and a dessert, which were all written from several blackboards in The district. The food quality was average, pub-like food. The dessert we ordered tasted very funky and I thought it had meat in it. Out of curiosity, I asked whether there was meat in the dessert and our server said, Yes Of course! There is bacon in this dessert. The District was very loud and entertaining only if you have a group of friends. It was loud from music and just chatter from people around you. They had very few actual private booth. The rest of the dining room consisted of large lounge benches with tall booster chairs. Different groups of parties would have to share tables. Our receipt at the end of the meal only included the two beverages we ordered and the three course meal was deducted using our voucher. One thing to note, they serve beverages inside jam cans. "

"Good food, bad service"

December 2010 — "I went to Amsterdam Rhino for a friend's birthday but sure what to expect, and it managed to surprised me. The first thing that I noticed was the young crowd -- mostly wannabe hipster 19 year olds. But it wasn't bad -- they had some good music from a live DJ. It started to get quite packed around 10 and it became hard to move but it was still a fun atmosphere. The second surprise was the food -- I had a burger with bleu cheese and it was probably one of the best burgers I've ever had in my life. They also had a great selection of beers. I was definitely impressed. The third surprise -- unfortunately -- was how bad the service was. In fact, she was the most incompetent waitress I'd ever had. Not only did she outright ignore us (which took some skill as we were very close to the bar where she spent 20 minutes chatting and twirling her hair, and we were a large group that was hard to forget about,) but she didn't seem to know anything either. She got drinks wrong, didn't know what beers they had, and -- this confounded me -- couldn't tell me if they were still serving food when I wanted to place an order at 9:30pm. Then 20 minutes late she came back and asked me if I remembered what I had ordered. Another staff member insisted on propping open the door behind me for several 15 minute intervals throughout the night, despite it being -25 outside. I asked him if we could keep it closed as I was freezing and he just gave me a blank stare and walked away. But other than the awful service, I enjoyed my visit. "

"Average Pub, Average Service"

December 2010 — "I'd never been to the Amsterdam Rhino before my recent visit for a friend's birthday. I've seen queues lined up outside on Friday and Saturday nights so it must be quite popular. When we arrived, it was the midpoint between after work drinks and when the pub turns into a bar with a dance floor. It wasn't overly busy when we arrived so there was no excuse for the very average service we received. It took so long to get served that we went to the bar ourselves for the first round. After that, when we did finally catch the server's attention she was pretty disinterested and kept telling us we could only order from her until 10pm when she got off work. She obviously wasn't overly excited to be working. She was quickest at bringing the bill so she could get off work and go home. Other than that, the pub was OK. The music that the DJ played was great and fun but the crowd that arrived once the DJ started was quite young and not my scene. They do a bunch of their own beers and I tried both of the wheat beers on offer and they were very good. The bartender that served us when we got our own drinks was nice and helpful. Their menu is pretty good with a number of burgers on offer (I tried the veggie burger, which was tasty) and they do gourmet poutine with lots of choices. It looked amazing. Overall it was an OK pub but not one I'd make into a regular spot. "

"Good Food, Good Beer, Good Music, Poor Service."

March 2009 — "We had to go to the bartender to get more drinks. Later we went over to the bar to "get" her. I come to expect service like this in the more snooty establishments. Come on, this is the "service" industry, we can do better than this. Otherwise the music is good, the beer good, and the food. "

"Nice Spot for Lunch"

June 2007 — "Had lunch at the Amsterdam Rhino with a friend recently, and despite some bad service (nothing new in Calgary these days), our drinks and food were great. We sat on the inner patio and enjoyed a very tasty in-house brew while we waited for our lunch to be served. We both ordered the Calamari sandwich and thought it was an original idea that worked out well. I'll definitely be going back."

November 2006 — "I went to the Rhino with some friends for the first time last night and it was amazing. Great music downstairs and averagely priced drinks. ($4.00 highballs) Very good vibe to the place."

"Clean, cool look but smoky"

September 2006 — "I've wanted to eat here for a while but only got the opporunity today. The atmosphere is cool and clean, but I walked away smelling like a kipper. I think the restaurant next door (adjoining) is smoke free, I'll try there next time. The food was very tasty. I had the Steak and Frites and a ginger ale. The bill came up to just over $18. The steak was done perfectly and it was different than I've had it before. Different good. It was seasoned, I'm not sure with what, and it came with a pat of butter on top. A little rich but satisfying. The fries were seasoned, possibly with fleur de sel, I'm not sure. I really didn't need the mustard or ketchup that was served with them because they were so good."

"Good Beer, Cool Atmosphere"

August 2006 — "Amsterdam Rhino is a cross between a westcoast style pub and a wine bar, with a trendy, wood interior and heated patio. We went just for drinks but they also have a menu. They don't have much beer on tap, but they make their own. I had the hairy eyeball, which is a foggy beer, much like Hogaarten, only I actually liked it better. And it only cost $4.25, cheap for downtown. Brick walls add to a warehouse feel. It's a hip joint. High ceilings meant it wasn't smokey. And the DJ (Wednesday) spun some great acid jazzy, trip-hop type grooves. And Wednesday is half price wine, which is also nice. They also tout that they are cocktail specialists with a big bar and trained bar tenders. Their house gin is bombay sapphire."
