May 2010 — "This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Victoria, and I no longer try many others. I use to work downtown and frequently went for bento boxes at lunch.
The food is always very fresh and fast, so does make a great restaurant for lunch or dinner. I have been here probably close to 30 times, and have never had a bad meal, which are pretty good odds really.... fish is always nice and fresh, never a "fishy" taste at all. The tempura is also very nice, and it is clear they use nice fresh oil.
Another significant advantage here is that food comes out very fast. We were last there for dinner, where the restaurant was full, and all four of us still had our meals within 15 minutes. All very well times too, as appys, sushi, entrees all came on time.
The only (small) criticism is that the staff are not overly friendly. They do a very good job serving, and always there when you need anything, but it doesn't hurt to crack a smile once or twice does it?
Absolutely recommend this restaurant and will return"

December 2008 — "Azuma is located right in the heart of downtown Victoria and the three times I've been there, it's busy. This last time was a pretty typical experience and I warned my friend about the place but we didn't have many options as it was Boxing Day and most restaurants were closed. Two of us were shopping and decided we'd grab something to eat before heading home and thought sushi sounded good. We didn't wait long before we were seated and then waited for fifteen minutes to place our order. We waited another fifteen minutes for our food to arrive. I ordered the salmon/avocado rolls, spicy tuna rolls, and miso soup. My friend also ordered the miso soup and the teriyaki chicken bento box. My soup tasted like chicken noodle soup, the avocado was brown, the tuna was extremely stringy and the spicy sauce tasted a bit like bbq sauce. My friend thought her soup also tasted like chicken noodle, and found her bento box provided very little vegetables and chicken but a lot of rice. I mentioned the brown avocado to our waitress so she took that off the bill. I didn't have the guts to tell her how awful the tuna was. I didn't even eat it as the consistency was starting to make me feel sick. I would never go back to Azuma!"

August 2008 — "I think Azuma is an example of how far location and design can take a restaurant these days. The place seems very popular, but I don't think it's because of the food. Though their sushi is pretty good, I have found it's a little bland and seem loosely rolled. My girlfriend found a hair in one of our rolls and though I tend not to get work up about this common mistake, it was enough to turn me off of Azuma. "

January 2008 — "My wife and I ordered the Love Boat for Two at Azuma Sushi last night, and thought it was quite average. While the presentation was nice, the sushi itself (and the tampura and miso soup that came before it) was missing something. It just didn't have that really fresh zing to it. The atmosphere and location of the restaurant is great, and our service was excellent. I don't think I'll go back. If I do, I'll definitely order a la carte."
