May 2011 — "The Dutch Bakery & Coffee Shop on Fort Street has been highly recommended to me by friends, just for the amazing shortbread and sugar cookies and homemade chocolates. I walked up to the bakery and my mouth was already salivating from the delish looking goodies in the window display. The bakery was very busy when I walked in and I only had to wait a few minutes before a young girl asked to assist me.
I couldn’t decide right away and told her I would need another moment to look around, she smiled and walked away and seemed to be annoyed, but I finally was able to decided on trying a sugar free chocolate chip cookie, and I took home a small selection of home made chocolates (dark chocolate covered ginger was great!). The same young lady helped me but she still didn’t seem enthusiastic to be working and when I thanked her she didn’t smile and just handed over my selections. Despite the unhappy staff member the sugar free chocolate chip cookie was pretty amazing!
I noticed the coffee shop that serves breakfast and lunch, I reviewed the menu and I'm definitely returning to try a soda shop style root beer float!"

July 2008 — "This is one of the most interesting little diners I have found. Located on Fort St. just up from the inner harbour, the diner is nestled into a mall filled with clothing shops, touristy trinket stores, and other restaurants. Founded in 1956, the walls are covered with huge photos relating the history of the restaurant. As far as I could tell, the interior looks identical to how it looked in the ‘50’s, and some of the patrons even looked as though they had been frequenting the café for a long time! People seemed to know each other, and it turned out some of the staff working there are actual relatives of the original owner! The entrance of the diner is a great little bakery, filled with all types of delicious looking desserts. The small restaurant is in the back, and offers breakfast all day, lunch and dinner. And the prices! A coffee and a Danish were $2.25, and ½ an omelette (I suspect this is popular with the older crowd) was around $3. I had eggs and toast and coffee for around $5 (without tax). The only down side I could see with this restaurant was the accessibility to the washrooms as a steep set of stairs had to be climbed to get to them. All in all, a great spot to soak up the old feeling of Victoria without spending a lot of money."
