May 2011 — "This place has some odd hours (shut down between 3:00 and 5:00 pm so we rushed to get there for a late lunch. They serve breakfast and lunch until 3:00. They conveniently have a little waiting area since they are always busy. Our wait was about 15 minutes so not unbearable. It turned out to be well worth the wait. When you walk through the door there is a curtain separating the lobby from the tables. It's quite crammed inside with the tables arranged the way they are but we managed to get a corner high table. I ordered the Happy Hens Curry Tofu Scamble ($11.50) which was really tasty but salty. It was a pile of tofu, veggies, hashbrowns and multi-grain toast. Fresh organic ketchup was served for the hashbrowns and a berry compote for the toast. They were terrific. I also ordered a Quebec beer which was a hibiscus rose wheat beer ($6.50) . It had a pink hue and floral notes and was tasty. I would definitely return to this gem but be prepared to wait for a table. It's hugely popular."

"Organic and Vegetarian Delight"

October 2010 — "A group of us wanted late lunch at The Coup. After seeing the menu online and noticing there was no meat, a vegetarian friend really wanted to try it out. Being a meat lover, I have never been so happily full with such tasty meat-free food. We started with the sesame yam dip with a basket of bread sticks and flat crunchy cracker-like bread (sorry don't know the name!). This dip is great for people who like thick and slightly sweet dips. As well, we tried the falafel quesadillas (everyone's favorite!) and the grilled panini. Both sandwiches weren't dry and were very flavorful. I loved how each dish was unique and opened me up to new flavors. I would definitely come here again! If anyone is up for a tax-free meal, you can get take-out and provide your own container - another great way to help save the environment. The restaurant is quite dark (candle light) and very small so I wouldn't suggest a group of more than 4-5 people - you would just end up having to sit in separate tables. "

July 2010 — "The Coup is a fully vegetarian restaurant on 17th Avenue. Granted the parking is never good for places on 17th, if you are prepared to park a ways away and walk, it isn't too bad. The atmosphere is really quaint and minimalist. I think it is a great environment for a date, and because it is small, the noise level is low making it easy to have good conversation. One of my favorite drinks is a pisco sour which I rarely find at Calgary restaurants so this was a lovely treat. Their appetizers are excellent and the meals taste phenomenal. The only downside is that is is a bit costly and the portion sizes are not generous, but at least the food feels healthy and hearty. We found the service good and really had a great experience there. I would return to this restaurant and would even recommend it for people who shy away from vegetarian food because it tastes so great! "

"Vegetarian Doesn't have to Taste Like Cardboard"

March 2008 — "The Coup is the ultimate in Vegetarian cuisine in downtown Calgary! It reminds me of Naam in Vancouver. The place is tiny - which means it can fill up quickly. But the wait is worth it. They are now serving breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Best to get there at 9 am when they open. You'll be sure to get a seat. The mediterranean scramble is too die for... it is filled with feta and olives and a bit of kale. Looks great and tastes even better. Whoever is doing the cooking in the back - totally has their flavors down. The combinations of foods with spices, etc... are always excellent and to think your actually eating really healthy too - is a big bonus!! Service is friendly which makes up for the sometimes waiting that occurs when the place gets hopping. But the ambiance and the casualness of the place makes you just want to sit back and relax - good food is not about rushing - right! If your into a bit of people watching as well - this a great hang-out. The crowd can be a bit ecletic. Overall - great experience everytime."

February 2008 — "Last year my friend announced that she and her family wre adopting a Vegan lifestyle. Being a committed carnivore, I was less than supportive. When she suggested we have our regular "girl's dinner" @ The Coup, I mocked her more than a little. However, we were forced to eat our words along w/ some of the best food we've ever had! The restaurant is beautiful, the service is excellent and the food...let's just say we were hooked and have had numerous meals there since that initial visit. Personal favorites include the Rosemary Yam Fries, the Little Dipper and the Falafel Quesadilla. I will go back again and recommend this restaurant to anyone that appreciates fresh, delicious, creative food - vegetarian or not!"

June 2007 — "Coup has a great menu filled with interesting and healthy dishes. My favourite is the Chilean salsa panini with brie. It is amazing and you have a choice of salad or yam fries on the side. My only issue is that since the menu changes you can't always get it. But the delicious "El Taco" comforts me when I can't have my panini! The organic ginger beer is awesome too! "

"Tasty Panini, Nice Treaty"
Image

Save Review

September 2006 — "I had lunch at The Coup today and was quite impressed. While the restaurant is tiny, my sandwich was huge on flavour. I ordered a Panini with caramelized onion, brie and pear. The ingredients complemented each other perfectly, and the Panini was grilled/toasted to perfection ($10). With the Panini, I ordered the root and tarragon soup, which was original and also very tasty. The service was excellent until the noon-hour lunch crowd quickly filled the place (it took awhile to get my bill settled)."

"What a treat!"

August 2006 — "I've visited The Coup on a couple of occasions and both times I was very impressed. While it is very small, it is still a really cool and cosy spot to spend an evening. The location on 17th avenue is very convenient and great for people watching if you're on the patio. Everything on the menu is vegetarian and most (if not all) can be made vegan. There is also a good variety of choices including quesadillas, noodle bowls, salads and more. I had a noodle bowl with tofu and it was delicious. It was great to be able to enjoy a veggie meal at a hip restaurant in Calgary. The Coup is the type of place that Calgary scene has been missing and could definitely use more of."

"Fresh Food and Jams and Yams"

March 2006 — "As a meat-lover, i wasn't sure i would enjoy my visit to this vegetarian restaurant, but i was quite pleasantly surprised. I had the yam dip and a salad, and both were great. They always play smooth funk music that's as fresh as the food. The only downfall is that the Coup is a miniature restaurant, so they can't accommodate large groups. It's probably best to go for dinner, because the lunch menu is missing some of the best dishes that appear on the dinner menu. "
