February 2012 — "Last weekend my boyfriend and I went for breakfast at 1886 Buffalo Cafe. It was a Sunday morning and I was worried it would be too busy, but when we got there we were happily seated right away by our server. She took our drink orders and was back in moments with coffee and orange juice. I decided to try something unique off the menu instead of ordering my usual two eggs, bacon and toast. I selected Ed's Bennedict, which was described as two eggs on toast with grilled tomato and cheese. My boyfriend also decided to be more adventurous and ordered the breakfast burrito. Our food came quickly, and the description of the Ed's Benedict was bang on. My was there a lot of cheese! It was delicious. It was served with hash browns and toast, so it was definitely too much food for me, but we had the potatoes packaged to go. I really enjoy 1886 for the unique atmosphere. It's a very old building and down in the basement (where the restrooms are) there are tons of photos of Calgary through the years. It's fun to go down and take a look at the history of the city. I have to say it is a bit pricey for the food, but a great place to go once in a while for a treat."

September 2011 — "If I am going somewhere for brunch on a weekend, I always try to head there first. I love the atmosphere, I love that it's usually crowded and noisy, and I love their potatoes. Nobody in the city makes potatoes as well as they do. Which is a bit of a Catch 22 because usually, I am not tempted to eat them anywhere else. At 1886, I always clean my plate.
Anyone I've taken there always enjoys it too. Never had a complaint except for once when they kept bringing us endless cups of coffee which caused residual jitteryness.

September 2010 — "Having recently moved to Calgary, my husnband and I wanted to try a local breakfast eatery. I had read the reviews on trip advisor where people raved about how good 1886 was, so we thought we would try this cafe. The atmosphere is charming; the food was fine but absolutely nothing special. There are no pastries, pancakes or waffles on the menu, only egg dishes, breakfast meats, and a yogurt parfait. There was no line when we arrived (11am on a sunday) and there were a few empty tables. We waited about 5 minutes and finally grabbed two menues and seated outselves. The service was average (no pleasantries exchanged with the waitstaff whatsoever) and my coffee was refilled only at the end of our meal. I probably won't dine here again. "

November 2007 — "I'd heard that the 1886 Buffalo Cafe was a bit of a landmark place for breakfast in Calgary so when I recently had visitors from out of town, I decided it was a good time to try it out. And having now done so, I highly recommend it. For locals who just want great grub or for visitors who want to go somewhere with a bit of character - this tiny black and white restaurant is the place. The breakfasts are yummy and huge, the atmosphere is cosy, the floorboards are worn, and the service is friendly! And, the cafe was packed (shortly after our arrival there was a line out the door) so there are obviously a few others who feel the same! I wont' be waiting for more visitors as an excuse to go back!"

January 2007 — "I love this place. Wish it was closer to my apartment so I could go every weekend. The historical wooden building gives the cafe a cosy, charming atmosphere, so relaxed it feels like home. The only complaint I have about the decor is the giant buffalo head sticking out of the wall. The food's fantastic - plates overflow with perfect hashbrowns, eggs and fat pieces of toast at breakfast time which probably explains the queue for Sunday brunch. The location's great too (except for being too far from my house) - situated in the quiet downtown Eau Claire area, a stroll through Prince's Island Park after breakfast is a nice way to help that brekky settle."

This quaint cafe is a Calgary landmark both for its historic venue and the popular all-day breakfasts it serves. Originally the headquarters of the Eau Claire Lumber Company, the building dates to the late 1800s (hence the name) and customers can enjoy many of its original features while dining on eggs benedict, bacon and eggs, omelettes and other classic dishes. Open 6am to 3pm.
