December 2010 — "It's my favorite restaurant in the world - every birthday and christmas and special occasion - that's where we go. Plus they serve Canmore's Grizzly Paw beer which is the best beer on earth! "

"WORST EVER"

April 2010 — "We always give a restaurant 3 tries. Well this was our third and WORST ever experience. The food was so bland. The escargots were tasteless. If you closed your eyes, you would not know what was in your mouth. Caesar salad. That was a joke, NO TASTE, NO GARLIC, NO CHEESE - it sucked. Couldnt finish it. The buns came. Probably would have been ok, had the butter not been ransid, or margarin, or oil substitute or whatever grease the served with it.. I told my husband we needed to leave before the entree, but he insisted it couldnt be worse. WELL, IT WAS!!!! WE couldn't even have more than 3 bites of our meal. NO taste to the beef. The prime rib was tough like a rock and over done. The steak had no flavor. Gave up. What happened when we complained... for the third time? They offered us more food. Like we would want another disaster. So we gave up. No compensation. We were charged full price for the worst dinner we have ever had. When you can make a meal 20 times better at home for a 20th of the cost of the garbaage they served - I will always opt to stay home. I would NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to have a decent meal! Such a pity, as it used to be a really great place. I am rating the quality of food a 1 only because they don't have a minus 10!"

"Classy Rustic"

May 2008 — "Driving around south of Calgary found us at Bragg Creek. We decided to check out the Steak Pit because we had heard that they sometimes featured live music. Upon entering the building one's first impression was that the place was very rustic. Wooden walls and railings almost resembling corral fences gave the place a barn dance kind of feel. One look at the tables changed the impression substantially. They were covered in white tableclothes and each had a glowing candle suggesting a romantic dinner for two. Just as we had hoped, there were two jazz musicians performing, a female singer and a male acoustic bass player. For me, good live entertainment enhances the dining experience. The volume was appropriate and did not compete with our conversation. The staff were exceptionally attentive and gracious. However, I did have to remind them to give me utensils to eat my meal, but the rest was great. I ordered the salmon fillet with hollandaise sauce. It came with carmalized carrots and a baked potato. I thought the carrots were spiced very well. The potato was delicious too. The salmon was good, but not excellent. I enjoyed the experience as I had never had hollandaise sauce on salmon before. My wife ordered chicken stuffed with spinach, carmalized onion, artichokes, sundried tomatoes and mascarpone cheese. Other entres ranged in price from $19 to $35. The menu included Veggie Skewers, Chicken, Steaks, and Lamb dishes. I thought that the wine was on the expensive side. Gato Negro red was $18 for one half a bottle. In a liquor store it is about $10 for the bottle. I have noticed that many restaurants charge a little more than twice the liquor store price, but 3 and a half times the price is simply too expensive. (In my humble opinion):) In summary, this restaurant has a somewhat romantic ambiance, and the food is interesting. The service enhanced the experience. Just be prepared to spend a fair chunk of change. "

"Thank goodness for great service and an interesting ambience"

May 2008 — "The Bragg Creek Steak Pit is an old favorite of mine from when I was a little girl as my parents used to take us there for a special treat. It was interesting to return to this restaurant almost 30 years later! As I remembered, the ambiance was interesting - a cabin-like feel, at least in the part we sat in, a log chandelier, beautiful stain glass mirrors, an eclectic selection of art intermingled with signage with people's names on them...you know, the kind of signs people with cabins have in the front like "Gerald and Beatrices' place". We sat near what looked like a dead tree wrapped with little lights under the skylight, and a beautiful 'Round Oak' pot belly stove. Celine LaCoste sang a mixture of jazz and latino music to John Grey's bass and guitar playing while we ate. Candles flickered and the feeling was very comfortable and relaxing. Everything seemed wonderful and just what I remembered, until the food came. I was sadly disappointed. The Stuffed Chicken Breast with vegetables, baked potato and Caesar salad was $24. Our waiter was fantastic and worked hard to repair mistakes - no croutons on the salad, no cutlery to eat with, and soggy vegetables. The chicken was reasonable, although it was quite salty. And, I wish they had not placed little packaged butter pats right on top of my vegetables. While the ambience was lovely in the eating area, the bathrooms were pretty awful. Dust webs hung from the ceiling, tiles were cracked and looked a bit moldy, and the corners of the stall were dirty. That being said, the place is very old, but it would be worthwhile for the owners to attend to those little details as dirtiness in a restroom suggests perhaps other parts of the restaurant may also be unclean (whether it is the case or not). So, I can honestly say the service was terrific, the music was great, and the atmosphere was pleasant. Unfortunately, the food disappointed. "
